Good observations. I’ve always thought that theme parks were the worst of synthetic entertainment. Strap into a seat, listen to a guide recite the same lines he or she has spouted all day with the same fake enthusiasm at the same points, followed by the giggly screams as the ride plunges, a monster pops out or other “SURPRISE”. All for the benefit of sharing the same experience with countless others and having a common discussion point.

Rather spend the day in a park watching people or going somewhere off the beaten tourist tracks.

Only Easter has escaped commercialisation in Japan. That’s not because of any reluctance to show disrespect to a world religion – comical Buddhas and monks often appear in adverts here. And an anthropomorphic rabbit that lays coloured eggs would fit right in with anything you’d see on a USJ poster. No, the only problem is that Easter falls on a different day every year, and nothing must be allowed to overlap in the Japanese marketing calendar. It must make them gnash their teeth.

On that note, have you seen The Vice Guide To Liberia? Vice -”outsider journalism”, you could call it?- has very recently teamed up with CNN. I feel like this is huge. Check out the documentary. It’s up your alley.
